WATERMELON (Citrullus lanatus)

The great refreshing fruit for the summer




Watermelon is a large fruit with a more or less spherical shape that is usually eaten raw as a dessert. Its pulp is reddish or yellowish in color and has a sweet taste. It is a very refreshing food that provides very few calories to the body, it also provides some vitamins and minerals.


Watermelon has various curative applications, involving the pulp, the rind or the seeds. It is beneficial against sunstroke, hypertension or pharyngitis among other diseases. It is widely used in various American countries for its healing properties.

Watermelon is generally consumed raw, sliced, quartered, or even in balls. It is also used to make sorbets, purees, jams and preserves. In Russia they make a very popular wine from watermelon juice. The bark is sometimes used pickled or candied and in rural areas it serves as livestock feed.
